My classroom practices are based on various strategies to keep my students engaged in their learning. Here are some of my most important classroom practices:
- I have high expectations for my students, because I know that they can accomplish great things.
- Writing and reading are daily activities that are not only enjoyable, but absolutely necessary for growth. We will do both frequently.
- In this classroom, mistakes are opportunities to grow and learn. Growth occurs through time and experience. We will embrace our mistakes and learn from them.
- Authentic and culturally responsive material allows us to explore our own identity, as well as the identity and culture of the world around them. This is one of the greatest ways that I can prepare my students for the world beyond high school.
- Respectful discussions are fundamental parts of learning and the society that we live in.
- Collaboration, debate and discussions are used frequently for growth; this is not a silent classroom.
- In this classroom, I will honor diversity, and so will my students. This can mean honoring diverse backgrounds, diverse beliefs, or diverse learning needs. We will all support each other.
